There are guest houses of all shapes and sizes in Edinburgh so choosing the right guest house to stay in may take some time and thought. Country cottages and Georgian town houses attract different types of clientele even though no two country cottages or Georgian town houses are ever the same, The kind of guest house that you would prefer to stay in depends to a large extent on what sort of holiday you are looking for, whether you need to be in the city centre or down a quiet country lane, and ultimately, what you can afford.
Whether you would prefer a 4 star accommodation just five minutes walk from Edinburgh city centre or a smaller, and cheaper, Victorian guesthouse on the south side of the city, you are bound to find it. Centrally located guest houses are often fully booked, especially during the summer months and when the Edinburgh Festival comes to town, so you may need to book your accommodation months in advance.
Not everyone is into planning ahead, you may be one of those people who much prefers to take off at the drop of a hat and take pot luck on accommodation when you get there. If you come to Edinburgh for the Edinburgh Festival and you haven’t booked ahead then you may find yourself staying a night in one guesthouse and somewhere else on another. If you don’t really mind what type of accommodation you get, providing it is clean, purse friendly and with a comfortable bed, then this way of dealing with limited accommodation may not be a problem for you.
If you are a person who prefers to dot all the I’s and cross all the t’s before you leave home to go anywhere, then you will probably book your accommodation weeks if not months in advance. When you book your accommodation early you will find that there are many more guest houses for you to choose from. Providing you give yourself enough time then you can decide whether you want to stay in an elegant, refurbished five storey Georgian property or whether you prefer somewhere small and quiet.
If you don’t want to break the bank during your stay in Edinburgh then book accommodation at one of the many excellent, budget priced guest houses on the edge of town. It may be nice to be in the centre of everything but apart from the fact that it can get noisy in the evenings in some locations, it is also more expensive to be at the centre of things. Public transport is quite good in Edinburgh and there is a regular bus service to into the centre of town so being to the south or west of the city should not be too much of a problem.
Some guesthouses have family rooms and if you have young children this may be a more sensible option, you may also find that a family room is actually cheaper than booking two separate rooms. Not all guest houses are equipped to deal with young children so you need to check this out before making a booking at an Edinburgh guest house.
